American Pharmacists Association Academy of Student Pharmacists

Purpose:
The Maryland Regional Operations group was designed to communicate important information to the public regarding a variety of health topics of concern to people living in Maryland and surrounding communities.  Current outreach programs have been developed around lyme disease, however future topics of interest may include any health topic pertinent to Baltimore city or the state of Maryland.  Other examples include smoking cessation, sexual health and other vector borne illnesses such as avian flu.

Lyme Disease:
Lyme disease is the most prevalent vector-born infectious disease in the United States, with more than 23,000 cases reported in 2002 alone. Caused by bacteria spread through the bite of infected ticks, Lyme disease is estimated to cost society about $1 billion per year. This is an especially important issue to Maryland, which the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) list as one of the top ten states for reported cases of Lyme disease annually. In 2004 alone, Maryland reported nearly 900 cases of Lyme disease. The largest group affected is 5-14 year olds, with June, July and August being the prime months for contracting Lyme disease. Despite these ominous facts, Lyme disease is easily prevented, and if detected early enough, easily treated. Left undetected and untreated, however, Lyme disease may progress to more serious problems, such as heart problems, hepatitis, and severe fatigue. Pharmacists and Student Pharmacists can provide a vital source of first-line information for the public to deal with this disease.
