American Pharmacists Association Academy of Student Pharmacists

Over 60 million people in the United States suffer from heartburn. Although the potentially serious ailment has been linked to complications such as asthma, chronic cough, and even cancer in rare cases, 64% of heartburn sufferers are not aware that heartburn could cause serious complications if left untreated. Statistics show that 60% of sufferers have not discussed their heartburn with a doctor or pharmacist, and say that they "try to ignore heartburn" rather than treat it.

Purpose:
Heartburn symptoms can be controlled and complications can generally be avoided with proper treatment and monitoring from a health care professional. As the most accessible healthcare professional, pharmacists are key players in educating heartburn sufferers on how they can improve their quality of life and void possible complications in the long-run.
