On September 19th, Allen Tran, ABAE President, welcomed over 100 middle and high school students and parents at the Student and Parent Orientation Program. The Student Orientation Program included ABAE’s Tutoring Program Overview, a review of the calendar and upcoming activities, a review of policies and procedures, and introduction of tutors.
Allan also reminded everyone to take precautions against spreading the H1N1 Flu (Swine Flu). He encouraged parents to keep their child home if flu like symptoms are apparent. Additionally, he gave tips on How to Wash Hands and a list of federal government Web sites on the flu.
The guest speaker for the Parent Program was Ms. Wanda Williams, School of Pharmacy Molecular Biology faculty at the Shady Grove Campus. Ms Williams gave parents tips on helping their child apply for scholarships. She reminded that it is never too early to start helping their child prepare for scholarship competition. Tips on the application process included directions, deadlines, and accuracy of information presented. For a complete list of advice, parents can download her Tips on Applications and the PowerPoint presentation Preparing for Success: Introduction to College Scholarships.
The Parent Program concluded with Ms. Margaret Hayes, Director of Strategic Initiatives and ABAE Advisor, giving several links to Web sites for free PSAT and SAT practice exams. She suggested that parents encourage their child to take a summer “vocation vacation” to explore future careers. Ms. Hayes also reminded parents to check the School of Pharmacy’s Web site for University closing information, including H1N1 flu and inclement weather.
Finally, just a reminder this is ABAE’s 10th year anniversary. ABAE plans a special celebration at the annual awards and recognition ceremony on May 1, 2010. Details will be available in spring 2010 at http://www2.pharmacy.umaryland.edu/studentorg/abae.
