Graduate Student Travel to Meetings
The Graduate Program offers its students the opportunity to apply for Departmental travel funds. Graduate students who are presenting their research at a professional meeting are eligible to apply. The Department attempts to provide travel awards up to $250 per student. Applications should be sent to the Coordinator, Graduate Program.
In addition, graduate students are encouraged to apply to the Graduate Student Association (GSA) for travel funds.
A Senior Travel Award is also available. Senior students who are nearing the end of the doctoral program can apply for full funding to attend a conference/professional meeting. This is a one-time award per student.
Guidelines
If the department has sufficient funds, the Coordinator, Graduate Program may approve one $250 travel award per continuing student per calendar year if the student certifies:
- They will make a presentation (poster or podium)
- They have applied for all other appropriate sources of travel money
The student must also provide:
- A letter or e-mail from their advisor stating that the advisor has no or insufficient travel money available to cover the cost of attendance. This is subject to verification by the PSC Business Manager.
- Copies of all expenses associated with attendance.
Content Summary
Briefly, the department will reimburse a student in their last year up to $250 (one time). Also, the department can reimburse up to $250 annually per student if the student will be presenting at the meeting, has already applied for other appropriate sources of travel money, and provides the Graduate Program Office a letter or e-mail from his/her advisor stating that the advisor has insufficient funding available to cover the student's attendance.
Students seeking departmental support need to complete the yellow TRAVEL REQUEST INFORMATION form (PRIOR to meeting) and green TRAVEL EXPENSE FORM. These are the same forms used by faculty and staff and are outside the 5th floor business office, room 540.
The intent is that individual faculty provide the maximum possible funding before turning to the department for help with travel expenses.
In the case of senior students (within 6 months of graduation), the amount of funding may be increased to $1,500 if departmental money is available and the above guidelines are followed.
