Endowed Chairs
The Emerson Professorship in Pharmacology was endowed in 1927 as a chair in Biological Testing and Assay by Captain Isaac Emerson, president of the Emerson Drug Company. The first chair was filled by Dr. Marvin Thompson, a pharmacologist at the Food and Drug Administration at the time Dr. Clifford W. Chapman, a pharmacologist from the Canadian National Laboratories, was appointed to the chair in 1939. Dr. Casimer Ichniowski and Dr. Naim Khazan were the third and fourth appointees to the chair. In 1988, Dr. Gerald M. Rosen was appointed Emerson Professor. His appointment as Emerson Professor let to Dr. Rosen being named an Eminent Scholar by the Maryland Higher Education Commission.
The Evelyn Grollman - Glick Professorship in the Pharmaceutical Sciences was established in April 2003 through the bequest of the late Evelyn Grollman. In 1983, Evelyn Grollman established a Lecture Fund in honor of her brother, Ellis Grollman, a 1926 graduate of the School. The endowed professorship will be used to recruit an eminent pharmaceutical scientist to further strengthen the School's research program.
The Ralph Shangraw/Noxell Endowed Chair in Industrial Pharmacy and Pharmaceutics was established in June 1995 by Colorcon and the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy in honor of the retirement of Ralph Shangraw. The endowment will be used to support a Professorship in Pharmaceutical Sciences until the fund has reached full funding and then will support an endowed chair.
H.J. (Jack) Custis, Jr., Memorial Scholarship Fund
Established in April, 1967 by friends and family of H.J. Custis, Jr. The income from this fund shall be used to provide scholarship support on the basis of reasonable need and academic ability to students in the professional program of the School of Pharmacy. Students must be residents of one of Maryland’s nine Eastern Shore counties to be eligible for the Custis Memorial Scholarship.
Christopher and Smaragde Voxakis Memorial Scholarship Endowment
Established October 19, 2005 by Christopher and Angelo Voxakis in memory of their parents, Christopher and Smaragde Voxakis. The purpose of this fund shall be to provide scholarship support for students enrolled at the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy, who are residents of the State of Maryland with a record of high academic achievement and demonstrated financial need.
The Doris Nuessle McCaig Scholarship Endowment
Established September 2, 2005 by Sally Van Dorn in memory of Doris Nuessle McCaig. The purpose of the fund shall be to provide scholarship support for students enrolled in the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy.
The Daniel “Buddy” and Helen Mendelsohn Family Scholarship Fund
Established June 5, 2005 by Helen Mendelsohn in memory of her husband Daniel “Buddy” Mendelsohn, class of 1939. The income from this fund shall be used to provide scholarship support for students enrolled at the University of Maryland, School of Pharmacy, who have demonstrated academic merit and financial need.
The Leonard and Gwynne L. Horwits Scholarship Endowment in Geriatrics
Established June 22, 2005 by Leonard and Gwynne Horwits. The purpose of this fund shall be to provide scholarship support for a student entering the third year of the Pharm.D. curriculum of the School of Pharmacy, who has demonstrated academic achievement and exhibits an interest and proficiency in geriatrics.
The Leonard and Gwynne L. Horwits Scholarship Endowment for the School of Pharmacy
Established June 22, 2005 by Leonard and Gwynne Horwits. The purpose of this fund shall be to provide scholarship support for a student entering the second year of the Pharm.D. curriculum of the School who has demonstrated high academic achievement and has exhibited empathy and concern for the community, as reflected through public service, participation in School or community organizations, or in other ways deemed meaningful.
Morris R. Yaffe Scholarship Endowment
Established December 26, 2005 in memory of Morris R. Yaffee, Class of 1936, by his family. The income from this fund shall be used to provide need-based scholarship support for students enrolled at the University of Maryland, School of Pharmacy. Preference shall be given to students who are residents of Maryland.
The Dr. John A. Scigliano Scholarship Endowment for the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy
Established September 2006 by Dr. John A. Scigliano. The purpose of this fund shall be to provide scholarship support to a third or fourth year student pursuing an advanced degree at the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy who has an interest in public health or research. First preference will be given to Maryland residents with an interest in public health.
