Medication Management Therapy Research

Charmaine Rochester, PharmD, assistant professor, and Deborah Sturpe,PharmD, assistant professor guided former PPS Ambulatory Care Resident Jody L. Lounsbery, PharmD, in a study of student pharmacists’ skills and attitudes toward providing Medication Therapy Management (MTM) services to patients. The team assessed and published results on the association between prior direct patient care experiences and student’s perceptions. An introductory pharmacy practice experience course showed significant improvements in student’s scores on five MTM competencies, the ability to perform a comprehensive medication review; select or modify medication therapy; formulate a medication treatment plan; provide resources designed to enhance patient adherence; and critically evaluate medical literature and practice evidence-based medicine.
