Department of Pharmacy Practice and Science

Community Pharmacy

In a unique partnership with NeighborCare, Cherokee Layson-Wolf, PharmD, assistant professor, supports community pharmacy in offering patient-oriented face-to-face specialty services. She models patient counseling in over-the-counter (OTC) medications, proper use of blood pressure and blood glucose monitors, and suggests cost-saving alternative therapies to consider. In patient counseling sessions, Layson-Wolf and the PPS Pharmacy Practice/Community Care Resident she directs, conduct annual Medicare Part D reviews and guide consumers thorough medication assessments and management.

Since 2005, a dedicated team of PPS faculty provided outreach to community pharmacists with continuing education programs in immunization administration. To date the School of Pharmacy has certified 382 licensed pharmacists and over 160 student pharmacists. Trainers include Cherokee Layson-Wolf, PharmD, assistant professor. Mona G. Tsoukleris, PharmD, associate professor, Lisa Charneski, PharmD, assistant professor, and other PPS faculty.  Currently certified pharmacists deliver influenza immunizations and the list is expanding this year in Maryland.
