Department of Pharmacy Practice and Science
Oncology
Medical oncology is a complex and multi-faceted area of pharmacy practice. James Trovato,PharmD, associate professor and PPS residency coordinator, serves on the medical oncology team at the University of Maryland Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Cancer Center. He is a knowledgeable resource to the team regarding inpatient cancer treatments and the management of cancer and chemotherapy-related complications such as infection, nausea, vomiting and pain management.
Trovato assesses the appropriateness of each patient’s medication profile taking into consideration drug-drug interactions and patient variables such as liver and kidney function; monitors laboratory results and provides patient education and support. The aim is to find the delicate balance of providing optimal treatment strategies while avoiding unnecessary toxicity.
Faculty’s clinical responsibilities enrich practice experiences for PPS residents, such as the Oncology Pharmacy Practice Residency. Trovato is director of the Oncology Pharmacy Practice Residency Program and coordinator of the University of Maryland Pharmacy Residency and Fellowship Program. Both inpatient and outpatient hospital-based learning supplement coursework on treatment options for malignant solid tumors and prevention and management of chemotherapy related toxicities. Second year oncology resident, Ginah Nightingale, PharmD, is gaining an advanced understanding of the pharmacist’s role in medical oncology.
