Summary

Professor/Associate Professor, tenure or non-tenure track, in the Department of Pharmacy Practice and Science.  This position requires research, scholarship, teaching, and service to the school, campus and the profession.

The position is a full-time, 12 month appointment.  This person will be responsible for conducting pharmacy-relevant health research, evaluating innovative pharmacy practice programs, securing external funding, and managing the programs and services of the Center including setting priorities in pharmacy practice research and supporting the development of new clinical products and services.

Supervisory Controls

This position is responsible to the Chair of the Department of Pharmacy Practice and Science. If applicable, clinical reporting responsibility to the medical/pharmacy director or designee at the practice site.  Teaching reporting and responsibility flows through the Chair of the Department through the Vice Chair for Education.

Minimum Qualifications

An earned Doctor of Pharmacy, Public Health, or Philosophy degree from an accredited school.  Post-graduate training (residency, fellowship or equivalent experience), sponsored research track record, and teaching experience are required.  Eligibility for Maryland licensure for PharmD holders is required.  Excellent communication and mentoring skills are essential.  Specialty certification and evidence of scholarship are highly desirable. Grantsmanship and authorship skills are highly valued.  Applicants with several years of experience, especially as a principal investigator, are desirable.  A more specific delineation of responsibilities follows.

Position Duties

Education

  • Ability to teach a range of topics in area of expertise is expected.  Exact teaching responsibilities will be determined in discussions with Vice Chair for Education.
  • Provide didactic course instruction in the PharmD curriculum.
  • Develop and teach either clerkship experiences for pharmacy students and residents in  practice sites or postdoctoral fellowship placements, as applicable.
  • Share research methods expertise with students, pharmacy residents, pharmacists, staff, physicians, patients, and patient caregivers, through teaching, mentoring, publication, and presentations.

Practice

  • Develop active practice site(s), including but not limited to, consultations for healthcare providers, public agencies, and insurers as it relates to the position holder’s area of expertise.

Scholarship

  • Engage in scholarly activity in areas of interest. Quantitative research methods and related activities are essential, but may include development and evaluation of innovative pharmacist-provided care, as well as, instructional design.
  • Degree of research involvement will be in-part dependent on whether the academic appointment is tenure-track or non-tenure track; active publication and presentation of work is expected in either track.
  • Scholarly activity may be pursued either independently or in collaboration with other campus faculty.

Service to the University, School, and Public

  • Participate in appropriate faculty activities (e.g. faculty assembly, department meetings, faculty committees), professional organizations, and other endeavors is also expected.

The University of Maryland professional campus is comprised of the schools of Pharmacy, Medicine, Nursing, Public Health, Social Work, Law and Dentistry. The campus is nationally recognized for our successful collaborative research, innovation, and interprofessional practice. The School of Pharmacy has recently opened a satellite campus at the Universities of Shady Grove.
