Department of Pharmacy Practice and Science

Center for Innovative Pharmacy Solutions

                          Catalyst for Innovation

Mission/Vision

Our mission is to be the catalyst for pharmacy practice innovations that optimize the role of pharmacists in improving patient care through evidence-based healthcare solutions.

CIPS draws from the strength of the Pharmacy Practice and Science Department innovations and collaborations in pharmacist-directed care to advance practice-based and clinical translational research. CIPS pioneers and strengthens advanced practice programs that improve clinical, humanistic and economic outcomes. Our successful practice partnerships in community pharmacies, clinics, hospitals and institutional settings serve as models in quality care. We promote and advocate for the compensation for pharmacist delivered care and services.

Strategic Goals

  • Stimulate, organize, fortify and quantify our innovations in practice
  • Strengthen and grow research collaborations, scholarship initiatives, and methods development in phamracy practice-based research (PBR)
  • Advocate for compensation of pharmacist-delivered care and develop evidence to support this trend locally, statewide, and nationally
  • Evaluate and promote the scalability of innovative healthcare models in pharmacist-directed practice and multi-disciplinary settings
  • Establish CIPS as the center for development of a shared pharmacy practice vision in the state of Maryland and the nation
  • Convene forward-thinking leaders and set the agenda on critical issues in the future of pharmacy practice
  • Train faculty, students, residents and pharmacists to pursue evidence-based practice development in research and innovative practice implementation

Capabilities and Successes

  • Intensive and advanced pharmacy-based practices in community, ambulatory and hospital settings
  • Innovative models of care: including MTM, Collaborative Practice, disease management, patient self-management, and clinical pharmacy

  • Cultural competency in health care
  • Collaborative practice
  • Chronic disease management models

The growing field of PBR tops the PPS research agenda. Our researchers capture valuable data from the interface between patient and pharmacist. PBR is critical to understanding the value of the patient encounter and to measure the outcomes related to pharmacist-directed interventions.

PPS programs facilitate and support faculty efforts in translation of findings into the clinical practice environment. The P3 Program is a model in the translation and dissemination of an effective practice intervention.
