Pharmacy Practice Residency *

*Up to four months of the required experiences of this PGY1 residency will be conducted in areas of practice involving pain management and/or palliative care.

General Description:

The University of Maryland School of Pharmacy is a structured post-graduate education and training program intended to help the resident develop advanced knowledge and skills in the practice of pharmacy, with an emphasis on the delivery of pharmaceutical care, with a focus on caring for patients with advanced illnesses. The resident will develop skills in patient care, pharmacy practice, administration and management, education, and research as they relate to the practice of pharmacy, and a topical focus on hospice and palliative care.

Residency Program Purpose Statement:

Pharmacists completing this residency program will be able to practice pharmacy in multiple patient care settings in an independent and professional manner. They will be able to integrate data and formulate appropriate pharmacotherapeutic recommendations to other health care providers for individual patients or on a systems-level. Graduates of this residency will be able to manage and improve medication-use processes for individual patients as well as at a system level. They will be able to demonstrate leadership abilities including identifying systems-level issues, project management skills, promoting the pharmacy profession, and utilize interpersonal skills to achieve goals. Research and education will be two other key elements that the candidate will be able to successfully utilize in promoting appropriate drug therapy throughout all levels of the medication use process. Finally, graduates will possess self-development and evaluation skills, as well as appropriate life-long learning skills. Pharmacists will be able to demonstrate achievement of these competencies in a wide range of practice areas, but will be particularly well-prepared to do so in a wide spectrum of patients requiring palliative care services.
