Managed Care / Ambulatory Care

The University of Maryland School of Pharmacy, in conjunction with a local managed care organization, offers an innovative one-year residency in Managed Care Pharmacy. Residents gain specialty practice experience with University faculty in a variety of settings, research experience, and teaching experience in an innovative curriculum. The residency experience will focus on population-based pharmacy care with involvement in disease state management, claims database evaluations, pharmacoeconomic evaluations, formulary management, and policy development. The resident will also provide individual patient-specific care and drug information services. In addition, the resident will have opportunities to teach entry-level Pharm.D. students.

The goal of the residency is to prepare the resident to assume managerial or clinical responsibilities within a managed care organization.

Objectives

  • Assist in the organization and support of a managed care pharmacotherapeutic clinic.

  • Design an innovative disease state management program.

  • Adapt published clinical practice guidelines for local use.

  • Determine formulary modifications based on literature evaluation.

  • Implement strategies to affect prescribing within a managed care organization.

  • Perform pharmacoeconomic evaluations.

  • Enhance verbal and written communication skills through interactions with health care practitioners, patients and administrators.

  • Develop teaching skills through participation in didactic and experiential education of students, faculty and professional staff.

  • Complete a research project and present the findings at the Eastern States Residency Conference.

  • Submit an article for publication in a peer-reviewed journal.

In addition to these unique experiences, the resident in Managed Care/Ambulatory Care is expected to participate in Pharmacotherapy Rounds, the Residency Management Seminar series, teaching activities and Journal Club.  For more information about these specific activities, please click here.
