Geriatric Pharmacy Practice Residency
The University of Maryland School of Pharmacy Lamy Center on Drug Therapy and Aging has created a one year post-doctoral residency in geriatric pharmacy practice. This residency combines clinical, administrative and research components to provide the resident with invaluable skills to pursue leadership roles in the field of geriatrics. With the number of elderly steadily increasing and an increasing focus on appropriate medication use, this resident will be well-prepared to work in the dynamic area of geriatrics.
The Peter Lamy Center’s mission is to improve drug therapy for aging adults through innovative research, education and clinical initiatives. Through the diversity of the faculty and the many practice sites available, the resident will get a broad view of issues facing many older individuals.
Objectives
Develop skills to critically evaluate complex medication regimens and provide recommendations.
Differentiate the appropriateness of certain medication classes in the elderly.
Promote professional, public and political awareness of the important role that pharmacists play in providing health care services to the elderly in various levels of senior environments.
Enhance verbal and written communication skills through interactions with health care practitioners and consumers.
Develop teaching skills by participating in didactic and experiential education of students, faculty, and professional staff.
Participate in the Maryland Chapter-American Society of Consultant Pharmacists to promote pharmacists awareness regarding legislative and therapeutic issues pertinent to the elderly
Conduct research related to geriatric medication related issues that impacts patient care and health outcomes
Community Outreach
Consistent with promoting educational outreach to the community, the resident will have the opportunity to work with state and local associations to increase awareness of medications and their appropriate use in the elderly.

In addition to these unique experiences, the resident in Geriatric Pharmacy Practice is expected to participate in Pharmacotherapy Rounds, the Residency Management Seminar series, teaching activities and Journal Club. For more information about these specific activities, please click here.
