Ambulatory Care

The University of Maryland School of Pharmacy offers a one-year, post-graduate educational program in Ambulatory Care.

Purpose of the Program

The overall purpose of the program emphasizes the preparation of ambulatory care practitioners who are also prepared to become a clinical track faculty or adjunct faculty member in a College of Pharmacy. 

Outcomes Required by the Accreditation Standard

At the end of the program, the graduate should be able to:

  • Outcome R1: Establish a collaborative interdisciplinary practice
  • Outcome R2: In a collaborative interdisciplinary ambulatory practice provide efficient, effective, evidence-based, patient centered treatment or chronic illnesses in all degrees of complexity
  • Outcomes R3: Demonstrate leadership and practice management skills
  • Outcome R4: Promote health improvement, wellness, and disease prevention
  • Outcome R5: Demonstrate excellence in the provision of training or educational activities for health care professionals and health care professionals in training
  • Outcome R6: Serve as an authoritative source on the optimal use of medications

The resident completes practice experiences (including experiential teaching) via general ambulatory care clinics and specialty clinics throughout the Baltimore metro area.  Didactic teaching abilities are developed through participation in PharmD education (including developing lectures, case based assessments, precepting students and attending and participation in activities of the Educational Theory and Practice class). Research abilities are developed within the School of Pharmacy and may be in collaboration with any department in the school, which assists the resident to conduct a clinical, humanistic or economic outcomes analysis of an ambulatory care service.  The resident is also expected to participate in:

  • Pharmacotherapy Rounds
  • The Residency Management Seminar Series
  • Teaching Activities
  • Journal Club
