Fellows and Residents

Fellowship and Residency Activities

While each program at the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy works with the individual needs of each resident, there are activities that all residents are required to participate in during the year. These include:

Pharmacotherapy rounds: Each resident is required to give a formal presentation to residents, faculty, staff and invited guests.  The presentation can focus on a comprehensive review of the treatment of a disorder or examine a pharmacotherapeutic problem in a specific patient population. Residents must successfully deliver their pharmacotherapy rounds presentation in order to complete the residency.

Residency Management Seminar: On the third Monday of every month, residents are required to attend management seminars.  These seminars focus on management and/or administrative topics relevant to pharmacy practice.

Teaching: Residents are required to participate in teaching activities throughout the year, and are designed to develop a resident’s teaching skills.  Teaching activities vary, and include lectures, leading small group discussions, assessing Pharm.D. students on clinical skills, and serving as a preceptor during experiential rotations. Opportunities vary from program to program.

Basic concepts and teaching skills are first acquired through a required Teaching and Presentation Skills seminar conducted every summer during orientation. Residents work with faculty as they prepare for teaching activities, and are assessed periodically. Residents who wish to pursue a career in academia are encouraged to participate in the course Educational Theory and Practice, which teaches concepts on instructional design and methodology.

Research Projects: Each resident is required to complete a comprehensive research project during the year. Assistance with navigating the Institutional Review Board (IRB) procedures and developing protocols is provided by faculty throughout the process.  Residents are required to make presentations to School of Pharmacy faculty and staff in September and in June, and are also required to present at Eastern States Residents and Preceptors conference. Residents must prepare a report of their project in publishable format as part of the requirements for successful completion of their residency.
