The Fellowship in Instructional Design and Evaluation will
The Fellowship in Instructional Design and Evaluation is a structured but highly individualized full-time 2-year program (starting July 1) intended to develop pharmacists with advanced clinical training to become educational scholars (i.e. able to independently engage in the scholarship of teaching). The fellow will earn a Masters Degree in Instructional Systems Development from the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) while simultaneously engaging in a series of scholarly projects at the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy. The nature of these projects will be based on the fellow’s scholarly interests, and the perceived needs of the department and school with guidance from the program faculty. The School of Pharmacy will serve as “the laboratory” in which the fellow will have opportunities to formally assess instructional needs and gaps as well as design (or re-design), develop, implement, and evaluate units of instruction in collaboration with the faculty. The fellow is required to design, implement, and evaluate at least one major hypothesis-driven instructional project that is written and defended in a manner equivalent to a Master’s thesis. The results of the project will published in a peer reviewed journal.
The fellow will also engage in scholarly and networking opportunities outside the School of Pharmacy. Specifically, the fellow will be expected to serve as a peer reviewer (with supervision) for papers submitted for publication on instructional design and assessment in the American Journal of Pharmaceutical Education (AJPE) and/or other journals. The fellow will attend at least one national meeting each year to network with other educators and will be expected to submit at least one abstract for a poster or podium presentation during the second year of the fellowship. Lastly, the fellow may elect to complete formal rotations at national pharmacy organizations or government agencies working on projects related to health professional education or continuous professional development.
