The Renal Clinical Pharmacology Lab focuses on the study of kidney disease and its effects on drug pharmacokinetics. Specific translational research projects are investigating the role of drug transporters (P-GP, OAT) on renal drug clearance and drug interactions, development of in vitro/in vivo correlation models of renal excretion and CYP-mediated drug metabolism. Clinical pharmacology trials are designed in collaboration with the Divisions of Nephrology and Cardiology and the General Clinical Research Center . Current studies are evaluating renal function in patients with BK nephropathy, congestive heart failure, and hypertension. Pharmacokinetic studies of experimental vaccines in collaboration with the Center for Vaccine Development are underway. Analytical methods are developed in this laboratory to quantify drugs and renal function markers in experimental and clinical studies using HPLC/UV techniques.
