Ilene Zuckerman, PharmD, PhD is a Professor in the Pharmaceutical Health Services Research Department. Dr. Zuckerman has served on the faculty of the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy since 1983. She received her Bachelor of Science (Pharmacy) and Doctor of Pharmacy degrees in 1981 and 1983, respectively, from the University of Maryland SOP, and she received her PhD in Epidemiology in 2005 from the University of Maryland School of Medicine.
Dr. Zuckerman’s research focuses on improving drug therapy in vulnerable populations. She is Principal Investigator on a career development grant funded by the National Institute on Aging (K01 K01AG22011) to examine risk factors for transitions to nursing home among community-dwelling elderly. From 1998 to 2004, Dr. Zuckerman was Principal Investigator on a contract to the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare to provide analytic, clinical and technical expertise for their Medicaid drug program. In addition to analysis of administrative claims to identify potentially inappropriate drug therapy, this contract also required evaluation of the effectiveness of educational and administrative programs implemented to improve drug use. Dr. Zuckerman has also been involved in research to improve pediatric asthma management using Medicaid administrative claims. She is Principal Investigator on a subcontract to an AHRQ-funded grant (R24HS011673-03) to examine national patterns of HIV diagnosis and treatment; this analysis uses the MEPS database.
Dr. Zuckerman is founder and executive director of Pharmaceutical Research Computing (PRC), which provides computing and support (including data warehousing and data analysis) to faculty within and outside of the University.
