My current research interest is the neuropharmacologic investigation of potential drugs for treatment of brain damage resulting from ischemic stroke or neurotrauma (neuroprotective drugs). This is collaborative research with investigators at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research in Washington , D.C.
The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) indicates that as the U.S. population ages, stroke deaths are projected to double during the next thirty years. Moreover, the increase in stroke-related mortality does not fully reflect the public health burden of stroke, as most strokes are not fatal and often result in chronic neurological disability. The NINDS goes on to state of the 700,000 cases recorded each year, 500,000 (or about 70%) are first-ever strokes. (http://www.ninds.nih.gov/news_and_events/proceedings/stroke_200401.htm)
Researchers are seeking to discover neuroprotective medications that may be administered prophylactically to high risk patients to mitigate the consequences of a stroke or to be administered therapeutically during or after a stroke to lessen or reverse brain damage.
