David A. Knapp, PhD, is professor of social, economic and administrative sciences and former dean of the School of Pharmacy. During the 2007-08 academic year he is on sabbatical at USG pursuing research interests in the pharmacy workforce, pharmaceutical education, and the quality of drug use and pharmaceutical care. Dr. Knapp earned his BS in pharmacy, and his MS and PhD degrees at Purdue, served on the faculty at The Ohio State University, and joined Maryland in 1971 after a sabbatical year at the University of Michigan School of Public Health. He has published over 165 papers and presented his work in many forums. He has served on the ASHP Commission on Credentialing, the AACP Commission to Implement Change in Pharmaceutical Education, and has been elected a Fellow of AAAS, AAPS, AFPE, APhA, and APHA. Along with his wife Deanne, he was awarded the Ernest Volwiler Gold Medal for Outstanding Research by AACP. Dr. Knappās teaching emphasis has been on the organization and financing of health care services in the U.S. market economy and pluralistic health care system.
