Cynthia J. Boyle is Director of the Experiential Learning Program at the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy where she is an associate professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice and Science. She earned her BS in pharmacy from the University of Oklahoma College of Pharmacy and her Doctor of Pharmacy from Maryland. She has served as a pharmacist in community, institutional, and consultant practice, primarily in Maryland’s Harford County. As advisor for the School’s Student Government Association and through the course “Effective Leadership and Advocacy,” she seeks to develop leadership in students for their future roles as advocates for patients, the profession, and public health. She is an editor and author for Leadership and Advocacy for Pharmacy, published by APhA in 2007, and regularly speaks on the topics of leadership and advocacy.
Dr. Boyle was honored as the “2002 Pharmacist of the Year” by the Maryland Society of Health System Pharmacists. Long active in the Maryland Pharmacists Association (MPhA), she most recently served as Chair of the Past Presidents Council. Her resolution introduced in the 2000 MPhA House of Delegates eventually culminated in the formation of the Maryland Pharmacy Coalition which she chaired in 2004-05. Annually she has helped to create and implement Pharmacy Legislative Day in Annapolis by training student pharmacists on emerging issues and by encouraging participation in the legislative process.
Her service to the American Pharmacists Association (APhA) includes the editorial advisory board for Pharmacy Today, the APhA Foundation Scholarship Selection Committee, the 2005 Strategic Directions Committee, past member-at-large and 2007-08 Chair of the APhA Academy of Pharmacy Practice and Management Administrative Section, and Chair of the New Business Review Committee for the 2007 APhA House of Delegates. She was recognized as a Fellow in the American Pharmacists Association and as the LKS/Merck Vanguard Leadership Award recipient in 2004, and has served as national president of Phi Lambda Sigma, the pharmacy leadership society.
Dr. Boyle just completed her term as the Immediate Past Chair of the Professional Experience Programs Special Interest Group within AACP, and she was a presenter at the 2006 AACP Institutes on “Building an Effective Structure and Process for Experiential Education” in May and November. She also served on the 2006 Academic Practice Partnership Initiative (APPI) Award Advisory Committee, and participated in the APPI pilot project to profile exemplary sites for experiential education. She currently is active on the 2007-08 AACP Experiential Education Advisory Group.
