My medicinal chemistry program utilizes modern drug design techniques and novel organic methodology in the design and synthesis of ligands targeted at biological systems involved in drugs of abuse and cancer. Present studies in the opioid area include the synthesis analogs of morphine with reduced potential to produce constipation. In the stimulant area, we have shown that sigma receptor antagonists attenuate the lethal effects of cocaine and methamphetamine, thereby raising the possibility of developing agents to treat patients who overdose on these drugs.
