Department of Pharmacy Practice and Science

With over twenty-five years of experience as a practicing pharmacist and business owner, Professor Abramson brings a unique perspective to the School of Pharmacy. As a graduate from the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy in 1956, he joined the Read Drug and Chemical Company (now Rite Aid) and managed the operations and staff at four locations. After three years of success in retail management, he gained the confidence and skills to open his own community pharmacy in Essex, Maryland. With a solid background in marketing, sales and personnel, the Eastern Pharmacy flourished from 1962 through 1982.

Professor Abramson joined the faculty at University of Maryland School of Pharmacy in 1982 and has played a pivotal role in educating the pharmacy workforce. As the Director of the Pharmacy Practice Laboratory, Professor Abramson developed the course standards and curriculum for Practice Management. In preparing students to deal with the technological advances in pharmacy practice, Professor Abramson saw the need to upgrade critical equipment and learning facilities. Under his guidance the School created a state of the art learning center that accurately reflects community pharmacy practice.

Professor Abramson devotes many hours per year to professional organizations and students. He is a member of the Maryland Pharmacists Association, National Association of Retail Druggists, National Community Pharmacists Association, American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy, Rho Chi National Honor Society and Phi Lambda Sigma Leadership Fraternity. He has been honored with numerous awards and citations including: Honorary President of the Alumni Association (1998), Honorary President Maryland Pharmacists Association (1998 & 1999), Executive Council Maryland Pharmacists Association (1999-present), Teacher of the Year (1998), Best Class Advisor (1995), and Honored Alumnus School of Pharmacy (2002).
