Our mission is to guide and inspire research and scholarship in pharmacoepidemiology and drug safety.
Our vision is to improve public health by enhancing the safety of marketed medications through the development and application of pharmacoepidemiology and pharmacovigilance research and to provide education on approaches to identify, assess, manage and minimize risk.
Strategic Goals
- Develop and assess new methods for population-based monitoring of drugs and biologicals
- Foster collaborations with public and private stakeholders, including academia, government, industry, advocacy and consulting groups, through a culture of cooperation and critical review
- Provide graduate and continuing professional education on drug safety and pharmacovigilance
- Expand the pool of experts in pharmacoepidemiology and drug safety research through the training of new researchers
- Disseminate new approaches to drug safety and risk management to inform policy and practice
Ilene Zuckerman, Chair of PHSR Department, recently spent three months as a Fulbright Scholar and Visiting Professor at Chulalongkorn University Faculty of Pharmacy in Bangkok, Thailand. Under this program, she provided assistance with educational activities for PhD students in the areas of drug utilization and pharmacoepidemiology.
The Center for Drug Safety held its first sponsored lecture on Wednesday, March 25, 2009 in the School of Nursing Auditorium. Dr YT Chen from Duke University and Academia Sinica (Taiwan) spoke about his lab work into the genetics of Stevens Johnson Syndrome. It was a great talk on translational medicine - from the discovery of a gene, to the epidemiology, and to regulatory/labeling changes.
