Continuing Pharmacy Education

Academy of Preceptors

Preceptor development is the constellation of educational and continuing education activities, resources (including faculty and mentors), and preceptor events and recognition which empowers preceptors to optimally facilitate experiential courses and which nurtures professional satisfaction throughout preceptors’ clinical faculty careers.

To provide preceptor development, the School offers the Academy of Preceptors:

  1. to promote excellence in the Experiential Learning Program by achieving educational goals,
  2. to improve the delivery of experiential learning courses,
  3. to develop the educational skills of preceptors, and
  4. to facilitate networking opportunities among preceptors.

The Academy of Preceptors members are preceptors for the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy. These preceptors are practicing pharmacists and other designees who have volunteered for appointment as clinical faculty. Preceptors are provided basic training modules in CD-ROM format and periodic live continuing education programs.

A Note from Dr. Boyle

(CD-ROM Introduction)

It is my pleasure to provide you with this University of Maryland School of Pharmacy Preceptor’s Survival Kit, which includes modules on Empowering Preceptors to Teach: Roles and Responsibilities, Assessment as Learning, and Effective Use of Drug and Health Information Resources. The program development has been a collaborative effort of the Dean’s Office, the Office of Academic Affairs including Continuing Pharmacist Education and the Experiential Learning Program, and the Department of Pharmacy Practice and Science Experiential Learning Committee. Preceptor training is emphasized in the new Doctor of Pharmacy degree standards from the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education, and now all preceptors have access to Academy of Preceptors development programs. The Preceptor’s Handbook for Pharmacists is included as a resource for your professional library and supplements the program training modules.

Whether you are an experienced preceptor or a novice, I hope you will apply the program concepts to develop or improve your rotation. Thank you for your dedication to educating future pharmacists.

Sincerely,
Cynthia Boyle
Director, Experiential Learning Program
