White Coat Ceremony
The White Coat Ceremony is a wonderful and meaningful tradition in which the School welcomes 1st year students as colleagues dedicated to patient care. During this event, a guest speaker provides the keynote address and inspires students to embrace pharmacy as a profession of pharmaceutical care. Faculty members will present entering students with a short white lab coat, which represents their passage into the pharmacy profession with all the opportunities and responsibilities associated with it. The ceremony also provides an opportunity for the class to come together for the first time which is quite memorable for many students.
“To me, the white coat represents professionalism. When I wear the white coat, it reminds me to act more responsibly, maturely, and professionally with a respect toward our profession,” said Huong Nguyen, a second year PharmD student. "The image of health care providers in white coats has been a representation of trust from the general public. I hope this symbolic coat will be an inspiration for all of us to study hard and become worthy of the white coats that we are wearing.”
After students are ceremonially “cloaked” with their white coat, the Pledge of Professionalism is recited in unison, allowing the student a first glimpse of the importance of professionalism which includes ethics and values. Family and friends of the entering class are invited to join us for this special occasion. A reception is held immediately following the ceremony.
